Not just another night!

When girls decide to go out, it boils down to several hours of planning and organising...

Guess how long women take to organise a girls’ night out? If you are thinking in terms of a couple of minutes, then you’re way off. A recent study has revealed that the average girlie night out takes three days, five hours and 22 minutes to organise and lasts for just five hours and 32 minutes!

The study, which was conducted by a website, revealed that girls swap 16 text messages, five phone calls, and three e-mail to plan a get-together. The night out, according to the survey, is a result of military-style planning.

Agreeing with the study, Aswathi Arya, an IT professional, says, “In my case, girls’ night out happens every week, and it falls mostly on a Wednesday. So, we start planning from Sunday night. It takes at least three days to plan because we aren’t continuously discussing it. But, whenever we get free time, we text each other or call to finalise on one small detail or the other. Starting from who will be our sober driver for the night, to where we will crash after the partying and co-ordinating our excuses just in case we have to tackle calls from home — we have so much to plan! We also discuss what to wear so that we don’t end up looking too dolled up or dressed down.”

Women in the city say that such precise planning is applicable to even the most casual let’s-jam-at-the-coffee shop meetings. “When I have to meet my girlfriends for lunch, we start planning it out at least four days in advance,” says Ranjani Krishnan, a lecturer at a women’s college, “Since my best friends are all working, it’s difficult to get together on most days. So, we have to decide on a date by the process of elimination. And sometimes, to make things easier, we also draw chits to decide on the place.”

According to the survey, women flirt, dance with their handbags and gossip in the restrooms about female friends, colleagues and sex. It was also found that girls spend 54 minutes giggling and one hour and 22 minutes eating and drinking.

“For men, a night out is just like any other night. They generally don’t have anything special to do — just have a beer and watch a match maybe. But a girls’ night out is when we throw caution to the wind,” says artist Asha Menon, “Apart from discussing the girl with red hair and flirting with the guy who has a cute dimple, we also have fun in other ways. For instance, a girls’ night is the perfect time to watch romcoms. After all, what can be more fun than having a couple of laughs together?”

Actress Sharanya of Peranmai fame concludes, “Planning a get-together with my girlfriends takes anywhere between an hour and a whole week — it depends on the situation. For instance, when I was in school, it would take us more than a week to get even a lunch meet organised. We had to fib at home, find decent excuses and cajole our parents into giving us permission. But now, in college, we make plans within an hour. We usually watch a movie, have dinner and go home like good girls!”
